Acclaimed artist SZA’s highly anticipated album, SOS, features an impressive list of guest appearances by the likes of Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers and Travis Scott.
Paired with a selection of creative producers such as Babyface and Benny Blanco for songs like ‘Good Days’, it is no surprise why this record has been regarded so well upon its release in 2021. Following her trail-blazing 2017 debut Ctrl, SZA proves yet again that she stands on the forefront of innovation when it comes to R&B music today.
To a rapturous reception, SOS was released with three singles: “Good Days,” “I Hate U” and “Shirt.” As two of these tracks quickly rose to the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, along with later releases in the form of “Nobody Gets Me” and “Kill Bill,” it wasn’t long before this record gained universal acclaim for its distinct sound and SZA’s pitch-perfect delivery.
Subsequently, 2022 will see numerous publications listing this album as one of their bests. The remarkable accomplishment of SZA’s album, SOS, is made clear with its debut at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
This marks her first project to achieve such a feat and simultaneously broke records for being the largest streaming R&B record in United States history. Remarkably, it spent an impressive ten weeks as number one – making it the longest-running female album atop this decade’s music charts.
Even more remarkable? It was also crowned as Whitney Houston’s 1987 release “Whitney” for having seven consecutive weeks at No1! The album cover for SOS features SZA wearing a St. Louis Blues hockey jersey, which is a reference to a 1997 photo of Princess Diana aboard a yacht during a trip in Portofino, Italy, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
SZA explained that the original plan was for her to be on top of a shipping barge, but due to unforeseen circumstances, they had to switch to a diving board.
The Princess Diana reference was included because SZA loved how isolated she looked in the photo, and that was the feeling she wanted to convey with her album cover. Experience the incredible artistry of SZA’s SOS by checking it out on your preferred music platform today.
