Steve Lacy‘s debut studio album, Apollo XXI (21), was released on May 24, 2019, by Three Quarter (3Qtr) and AWAL.

The album was introduced with the singles “N Side”, “Playground”, and “Hate CD” and received widespread critical acclaim for its originality, cohesiveness, and introspective lyricism.

Apollo XXI delves into Lacy’s sexuality and coming out, and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, marking Lacy’s first solo Grammy nomination.

Lacy began working on the album in 2017, utilizing his younger sister’s bedroom (renamed Paramore Palace) after she left for college, while simultaneously touring with his band, the Internet, and collaborating with other artists.

He disclosed that he used methods other than an iPod or iPhone to record most of the album.

One of the songs on the album, “Like Me”, was written and recorded in July 2017, after a period where Lacy struggled to create music due to his emotions and fear of expressing his sexuality.

The song features Daisy Hamel-Buffa, who connected with Lacy over their shared experiences with sexuality and was later asked to sing on the track.
