Scorpion is the fifth studio album by Canadian rapper and singer Drake, which was released on June 29, 2018, by Cash Money Records, Republic Records, and Young Money Entertainment.
It is a double album with 25 tracks, with the first disc primarily consisting of hip hop and the second disc described as R&B and pop. Drake was the executive producer of the album, working alongside frequent collaborator 40 and manager Oliver El-Khatib. The album features guest appearances from Jay-Z, Ty Dolla Sign, Michael Jackson, and Static Major.
Lyrically, Scorpion covers topics that are common in Drake’s discography, such as claustrophobia, relationships, and his rise to fame. The album’s production draws influence from various genres, including soul, ambience, quiet storm, R&B, pop, electronica, and trap.
Scorpion was supported by seven singles, including “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” “I’m Upset,” “Don’t Matter to Me,” “In My Feelings,” “Nonstop,” and “Mob Ties.” All seven singles reached the top twenty on the US Billboard Hot 100, with three of them reaching number one. Upon its release, Scorpion broke Spotify’s one-day global record for album streams and Apple Music’s single-day record, previously set by Drake’s own album More Life.
While Scorpion received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the individual tracks but criticized the album’s overall length, it performed well commercially. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 732,000 album-equivalent units, of which 160,000 were pure sales.
As of January 2019, Scorpion was certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and “God’s Plan” won Best Rap Song. Scorpion also won Drake his second Top Billboard 200 Album award at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, among other accolades.
