On the 25th of July 2020, West posted a tweet which showcased an album cover with a unique infrared pattern. The shades of orange and red provided picturesque shapes of sun, moon and people in the sky against striking green mountains and white cumulus clouds dotted with purple hues.
On the 22nd of July 2021, aheadof Donda’s first listening event, a new cover was utilized as promotional material. The remake was based off of Louise Bourgeois’ gouache painting from 2007 – the same year that Donda West passed away.
As a part of her “Les têtes bleues et les femmes rouges” series, Bourgeois’ painting showcased an enigmatic woman in monochromatic red with a matching ponytail and the barely perceptible fertility idol. Yet Kanye West decided to forgo all these elements by selecting only a basic black square as his album’s artwork – much to everyone’s surprise!
